The Herald

  • A considerable training exercise taking over 100 hours to complete, I feel as though I went through some kind of artist metamorphosis during this piece. The painting I set out to create in 2020 was supposed to be much looser in style with a colour palette made up of pastel pinks and blues, and somehow, 2 years later I had created this instead. I have a very soft spot in my heart for owls. This one is a Eurasian Eagle Owl, or a Siberian Eagle Owl depending on the ornithologist that you ask. An apex predator in an unforgiving wilderness; I think their anatomy is fascinating, their weird plumage so invitingly tactile. I admit, however, that after the gruelling completion of this piece I don’t think I will feel the urge to paint another owl any time soon.
