Bonsai
-
Another early work in the Curator series, Bonsai is an imagined diorama that plays with scale and colour. This also one of the first works where I have a tree growing from an animal, a theme I regularly return to. It is a nod to the bizarre taxidermy creations of the Victorian age, but it is also just a visual representation of connections in nature that humans could have no concept of.
While not consciously doing so, Bonsai ended up being melancholy in tone. I see the bear as a forgotten mythical creature; a wise avatar-god on a mountain, or a sort of doorman to see us out at the end of the world.
